Zero-knowledge, in plain language

A proof convinces you of something without telling you why it’s true. That sounds like a trick. It isn’t; it’s the most useful idea in applied cryptography since the public key.

Start with the cave. Two doors, one locked, and a friend who claims to hold the key. You wait outside; she goes in, and you call out which door she should come back through. If she has the key, she can always comply. If she doesn’t, she has a coin flip’s chance each round.

Run it twenty times and you are convinced. Yet you learned nothing about the key itself: not its shape, not its cut, nothing you could forge.

That gap between convinced and informed is the whole trick, and every zk system since is an attempt to make it cheap.
